Ocean Accounts; Examples of Implementation session leaded by António Rua, from Statistics Portugal
The president of Statistics Portugal (INE), António Rua, will be the moderator of the opening session of the Ocean Accounts 2030 side event:
“Ocean Accounts: Examples of Implementation.”
With a solid background in macroeconomics, statistics, and academic research, António Rua brings a wealth of experience to the discussion on data-driven ocean governance. He has held several key roles at Banco de Portugal and currently serves on the Steering Committee of the Euro Area Business Cycle Network.
This first session will showcase concrete examples of how ocean accounting is being applied to support marine conservation, sustainable development, and economic decision-making. António Rua will moderate a panel of high-level experts, including:
- José Guerreiro (IPMA) – Ocean accounts for deep sea marine protected areas: the Portuguese experience
- Luís Bernardo Brito e Abreu (Blue Azores) – The input of accounts to support management of an Ocean Marine Protected Area
- Jerry Sheehan (OECD) – Supporting Policy with Insights from Ocean Economy Accounting
- Julien Million (World Bank) – Charting the Blue: Developing Ocean Accounts Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy
This session will set the tone for the event, highlighting how different regions and organisations are transforming accounting frameworks into tools for ocean sustainability.
